Used vehicle buying checklist

What to check before the viewing, at the viewing and before you hand over money. Works for bikes, cars and vans.

Before you arrange a viewing

Get the reg from the seller and run a free check. Make sure the make, model and colour match the advert, then read the MOT history. Save the advert so you can compare it with what turns up.

A free check tells you what DVLA and the MOT records hold. It won't show finance, theft or insurance write-offs. That needs a full report, and even a clean one tells you nothing about how the vehicle has been looked after.

  • Make, model and reg match the advert.
  • MOT failures and advisories read across several years, not just the last one.
  • Service history, receipts and the reason for selling asked for.
  • Outstanding recalls checked on GOV.UK.

At the viewing

Check the V5C against the vehicle. The VIN and engine number should match the log book. The V5C shows the registered keeper, which isn't always the owner, so don't take it as proof on its own.

View it in daylight. Look for uneven tyre wear, leaks, warning lights, mismatched panels and signs of repair. On a bike, check the forks, controls, chain and sprockets as well. If something doesn't look right, get it inspected properly. Don't guess.

  • VIN on the vehicle matches the V5C.
  • Tyres, lights, brakes and bodywork checked.
  • Started from cold if you can.
  • Test ride or drive only with the seller's say-so, the right licence and insurance.

Before you pay

Sort out any questions about finance, ownership or repairs before money changes hands. Get a written receipt with the vehicle, price, date and seller's details. Screenshot the advert and keep any promises in writing.

Do the keeper change online with DVLA. Tax doesn't transfer to you, and the vehicle has to be taxed and insured before you use it on the road. If you're not sure it's roadworthy, trailer it home.

This list helps you ask the right questions. It doesn't replace a mechanic or legal advice.
